Hyperactivity is a problem in humans and it is most certainly a worse problem in dogs. Hyperactivity can be described as abnormally excitable or exuberant behaviour. It is often accompanied by a short attention span as well. There are a number of possible causes. Some, such as an overactive thyroid are medical and a trip to the vet could solve the problem. More common are diet related issues. Tests with food colourings have shown links to hyperactivity so experimenting with your dogs diet could be beneficial. But the most likely cause is simply a learned behaviour.

Dog Obedience Tips

Often, when dogs jump up at us when we arrive home it seems flattering so we encourage the behaviour and that fuels the situation. Similarly, dogs get excited when they see the lead or hear the doorbell and we just encourage that behaviour as it is often seen as cute but as it progresses it gets out of hand it becomes a major problem.

A simple solution is, never give your dog praise or attention unless they are calm and submissive. It really will not take long for your dog to associate a calm state with your love and attention. Don’t forget that we ourselves are happiest when we are calm and relaxed and dogs are no different. This is one easy thing that we can do to give our dogs a happy life so make sure that your dog is always chilled out and stress free. A calm, happy and relaxed dog will unsurprisingly be a pleasure to live with.
